Jay Bruce Watrous, a longtime Arizona Republic copy editor whose love for words extended well beyond the pages of the newspaper, died Sunday after a lifelong battle with muscular dystrophy. He was 61 and lived in Goodyear.
Watrous, as a copy editor since his graduation from Arizona State University in 1971 with a Bachelor of Arts degree in journalism, was responsible for reading stories and newspaper pages for accuracy, good grammar, balance and other qualities before publication, and for writing headlines that crackled with vitality.
Born Nov. 19, 1947, in Chester, Conn., to Phil and Lyle Watrous, he moved with his family to Arizona at a young age because both he and his brother were diagnosed with muscular dystrophy and his mother thought the desert air would be better for their health, said Susan Milliron Watrous, Jay's widow."
