Return to Krista's Korner

"Each of us must come to care about everyone else's children. We must recognize that the well being of our own children is intimately linked to the well being of all other people's children. After all, when one of our children needs life-saving surgery, someone else's child will perform it. When one of our children is harmed by violence, someone else's child will commit it. The good life for our own children can be secured only if it is also secured for all other people's children. But to work for the well being of all children is not just a practical matter-- it is also right!" - Lilian G. Katz, Phd.

Vegas

Vegas Photos

We left at 7:30 AM from Goodyear and made excellent time. Did the usual food and beverage stops and enjoyed the scenery of US 93 on our way. We paid way too much for gas in Kingman, but only needed one fill to get there. The poblem is that there are no real services between Kingman and Hoover Dam, so Aidan and I both had to use the facilities badly by the time we got to the security check. Luckily, there was a portapotty there.
Hoover dam was cool, if distressingly low. It was weird seeing a casino just a few miles from the dam. We successfully navigated the 93 to the 15 to the 215 and found our hotel.
Upon arrival, we checked in and and I sent Chris and the boys to unload the car. We didn't move the car the entire trip. I had brought the wheelchair so that I didn't stress my poor knee. The first thing I did was plug in my laptop and sign up for internet. I found out the Tina, who we were meeting had arrived safely.

I decided to give her a bit, then tried to call her cell phone. No luck- my calling plan doesn't allow for international calls.

So, we made mistake number one of the trip. It was a rookie mistake. I called her from the hotel room to let her know we were there and that I couldn't call her. It was a bad line, which is understandable since the call was going from the US to Australia back to the US. Maybe 3 minutes at the most, but I doubt it was more than 2.
Later that night, I check the TV Guest Services. Cost of the call: $49.00

That kind of killed our budget for the trip, but we survived.

The food was good, if pricey. The sights were awesome, but I found myself frequently overstimulated and grouchy.

Meeting up with Tina was very, very cool.

We walked from the Excalibur to the Venetian twice- once on Tuesday and once on Wednesday. Then we took cabs home. Boys got very tired out, and today I looked it up on mapquest and realized it was 1.88 miles.

We did a bit of sightseeing, had dinner at the Mirage buffet, and it got late very fast.

We got to bed at about midnight.

We got up by 9 am the next morning and went for a swim. The pool had a waterslide and the boys had fun. We checked out, and went to see the sights again. M&M world and the Coke shops were cool. I did get a work call while we were at Walgreens. Then we got a call from Tina that her husband Bill was there, and we made arrangements to go meet them again.

At that time I didn't realize just how far we were going, but we made it. We then went to the Mirage and to Caesar's Palace. Had a ton of fun, and then it was already 7 pm and time to go home.

Chris went back to the Excalibur and got the car for us, and off we went.

Lo and behold, we got to Hoover dam to find out it was closed for construction and had to back track to the 95 to laughlin

Now, before I go farther, let us make a few things clear. 1) I hate going places without a map or precise instructions. 2) I had never taken the detour route before. 3) After the guard person reassured I told Chris "I hate this- I am worried we will make a wrong turn and end up somewhere in CA."

Guess what happened?
I just recreated our route home on Mapquest. Feel free to input to see it (Link to this page doesn't work)

We got home at close to three am.

Mapwuest says that when we hit needles, we should have stayed on the 95 and gone all the way to the 10. We were just trying to get to Kingman, because I knew my way to Kingman. I knew we were "lost" when we hit Needles and I realized we were in CA, and then we stayed in CA for quite awhile until we finally made it back into AZ.
